FDS Annual Report 2024/25

4 Chairperson Report Dr John Della Bosca AM The 2024-25 financial year was one of substantial change and renewal for FDS. The retirement of our founder and CEO, Mr Tony Trimingham, after an incredible 28 years of service would have derailed many organisations for a period of time but not FDS. One of Tony’s achievements was to put in place a team of dedicated professionals and a core of volunteers that has allowed FDS to seamlessly continue to provide much- needed support and services for families facing alcohol and other drug issues in their homes and lives FDS staff and volunteers across Australia continue to deliver services, including support groups, educational sessions and knowledge of our National Support Line that ensures families can access support at any time regardless of where they live. We remain grateful for the ongoing funding from the Commonwealth, NSW, Queensland, South Australia and ACT governments, and remain hopeful that all governments will contribute to FDS to meet the demand of families for its services across Australia. Once again, I want to specifically acknowledge the work of FDS staff, volunteers and the Board, in maintaining FDS as the first and only national organisation focussed on families and friends facing alcohol and other drug issues. However, one of the challenges that remains for FDS and many non-government organisations is managing the extraordinary rise in operational costs over the past few years. Apart from the inflationary pressures in the post pandemic period, there have rightfully been significant salary increases for people working in these demanding fields. Unfortunately, the simultaneous budgetary constraints across all governments have diminished their ability to assist us in meeting these increased costs. While this is a constant challenge for the Board, it is one that we strive to resolve through ensuring greater financial support from governments and the community. Indeed, it is a challenge we simply must overcome as far too many families need FDS and its services. As FDS now moves forward without the leadership of Tony, I want to thank Cigdem Watson for taking on the role of Acting CEO and Sandra Trimingham for her leadership role. My gratitude extends to all staff across FDS for also maintaining the high standards of FDS services and keeping Tony’s vision at the forefront of their work for FDS. Finally, I need to thank my fellow Board members, for their contributions and assistance in guiding this extraordinary organisation to help people in times of intense difficulty.
