Dear
Sir,
I have recently returned
to Australia after two years working for a US company
in Europe. I am so angry with the situation that I
find in Australia with the prevailing `economic rationalism'
attitude of government and the abandonment of education,
employment and health issues. The new Labor Prime
Minister, Tony Blair, often said that his priorities
to solve many of the problems in Britain was `education,
education and education'. It seems Australian political
leaders' answer to our problems are `prisons, prison
and more prisons'. I read about Damien Trimingham
in the Melbourne Weekly. What moved me was the sense
of much frustration with the cycle of drugs and crime
and the huge amount of dollars being wasted on enforcement
while lives are being lost. It appears a losing battle.
We must all do more for the community before it comes
apart. Drug addiction is a health problem and cannot
be solved by forcing it underground and without addressing
other social problems facing the Australian community.
